Interesting article.  I fully agree with his argument.  Hopefully, there will be no more debacles like running the SG via Geelong rather than Ballarat.

Try the proposed SG route via Toowoomba instead of via Warwick which would be 83klm shorter as an example.

Great point!  The example I cite still has 80% market share to PER and doing it properly would only have made a very small difference to that.  In this example, the Inland rail route will not get the same market share and an 83km deviation will make a far higher difference in rail market share.

Rail needs the infrastructure to enable it to be competitive with road both in terms of cost and time, in the instance of the inland rail link this has been on the agenda for too many years with one of the restraints against this line being constructed being that the proposed routing via Toowoomba to suit the vested interests of a few rather than the most cost effective routing from an operational perspective and a route that minimises transit times.
