TRANSLINK'S acting deputy director-feneral Matt Longland is encouraging people to plan their journey before heading out to enjoy the Australia Day long weekend.

"Whether it is to see cockroach races in Brisbane, cane-toad racing in Cairns, or egg-and-spoon racing in Bundaberg, it's a safe bet that people will be rushing around the state to community events during the long weekend," Mr Longland said.

"Australia Day is a special day in our community calendar, and for many it is the last opportunity for a summer get-together before heading back to work or study.

"The message is simple, plan ahead before leaving home and have your travel options sorted before heading out.

"If you are thinking about having a few drinks or staying out late, consider catching public transport or booking a taxi, or arrange to get a lift home with a safe driver."

On Australia Day, public transport services will operate to normal Saturday/weekend timetables. Standard fares and conditions will apply.

Taxis will attract the standard weekend flagfall of $4.30 for travel between 5am and midnight, or $6.30 between midnight and 5am.
