Light up at bus stop and cop a $550 fine

Sneaking in a quick cigarette while waiting for the bus can cost Queanbeyan smokers up to $550 from next week.

Smoking will be banned at all public transport stops and stations in NSW from Monday, including bus stops, railway platforms, ferry wharves, taxi ranks and light rail stations.

The changes are part of new legislation aiming to reduce public exposure to second-hand smoke, Southern NSW Local Health District spokeswoman Emma Woolley said.

"Creating smoke-free outdoor areas, such as public transport stops and stations, can provide a supportive environment for those who have quit and make smoking less visible to children and young people," she said.

Smokers breaking the new laws can be fined up to $550 by NSW Health inspectors.

Wish they would do that here.
One of my pet peeves is smokers at bus stops. Particularly, semi enclosed areas like Carindale Interchange.
The worst place ( Bus Stop ) of all is right outside the Emergency Entry to the PA hospital. The outbound bus stop on Cornwall St is a defacto Smokers Den for hospital Staff and Patients.
That is one bus stop I could never wait at cause I think I would die of suffocation..

A ? hangs over the enforcement, nevertheless, a good move.

Much as I hate to single them out, bus drivers tend to be bad offenders here.

As a non smoking Bus Driver, I agree there are some. I have been known to refuse to take a bus in which a previous driver has smoked in. Drivers are not permitted to smoke in a bus.

Taxi's are worse. Driver puffing away (with window down), but as soon as you hop in, fag out window up and you are stuck with the smell in the cab and on their breath. The cab often stinks of smoke because they do it so often. You'd liek to see them get out and smoke, but some are so fat I don't think they can.

Then on top you end up giving them directions on how to get where you want to go because the GPS doesn't know venue locations :-r
