New apps with real time bus information
Start: 17/12/2012 12:00 AM

Customers travelling on Sydney Buses can now track their bus in real time by downloading one of three new apps, TripView, TripGo or Arrivo Sydney.  The apps provide real time information for Sydney Buses operating in the Inner Sydney region and enable customers to:

view the location of their bus in real time
find bus stops and routes nearby using GPS
    view estimated bus arrival times
know when to get off the bus via an alert service
find where to buy a bus ticket.

The apps use information provided by Transport for NSW to determine the location of buses, and estimated arrival times based on GPS tracking and historical data.

Sydney Buses operating in Inner Sydney including South Harbour, Inner North, and Northern Beaches and Eastern Suburbs (Bus regions 6 - 9) will be tracked on the apps.

The apps have been developed following Transport for NSW's 'App Hot House' competition to encourage developers to produce the best real time bus app products. The competition was launched in response to recent customer feedback, which showed that customers are looking for real time information while travelling on public transport.

Download your preferred app now on the App Store or Google Play.

On Google Play you can download TripView, TripGo and Arrivo Sydney. On the App Store you can download TripView.

For more information on each app, visit 131500 Transport Info on the go.
And Translink think there info is the best in the world.  Not even the best on the east coast.

Good point.  I guess you get the timetable info.

I mentioned in Qld section a while back that every bus stop should be named as part of a real time system, make live tracking practical and displayable to pax on the bus so you know where you are and when to get off, real time boards at most bus stops of when next bus is due, and overall the system easier to use for non regulars by asking for a ticket to a more easily identifable stop like you would a railway station.

I was shot down in flames.

Note: these are all common in many OS networks. Sydney is on its way of getting there.

RTT, we are getting exactly this - not sure if you were shot down or if people said "wait, it's coming".  Logan is now entirely kitted out except for the real-time signs at stops, which are currently only located at the Hyperdome bus interchange.  Everything else is in place - on-board next stop displays on every one of their buses (in real time and with voice announcements), live next bus arrival on the website or on your phone, every stop plotted.  They are meant to be rolling out QR codes too so you just show up at the stop and scan it, then you can save that as a favourite to check before you leave.

The difference between the PTIPS system in Sydney and the system we are getting here is that PTIPS is only a transponder.  Up here, you get the vehicle kitted out with info screens and announcements too.

Every bus operator here will end up on the same system in the next 2-3 years.  It's also a way of rolling out duress and emergency alarms eveyrwhere because that comes with the telematics suite being fitted.

On buses in the US it's actually very common to see these things:

And on the sidebar is a bing maps thing showing your bus location in real time.
