WOOLLOONGABBA  FIVEWAYS circa  1921-1969



FJ Holden, Ford Cortina and choo-choo train



Bedford and Morris Z Ute. Ford V8 Pilot and a Ford Prefect. An Albion bus YUK!



Changing the direction of the tram cable power.



Just  in case you couldn't see the train coming at  walking speed, a gentleman  would
Escort  the train ringing a  bell.



Don't  know that round thing, but the trains could be  turned around to face the  opposite
[it's a turntable!!]

Direction  Ipswich Road at the Woolloongabba  Fiveways.  The other building is  the Gabba  Police Station"



There  you go! They still did the bell thing even when  trains were bright blue and  diesel
Electric.   Probably Workplace Health Safety and tied up  with all that risk  management
Stuff?



OK,  what happened, the cop has dyed his  hair! It use to be  red!
Hence  "Just past the red headed Cop" as a  direction.
A  Ford Prefect, Ford V8 Pilot, Jaguar, FX Holden  and in the distance a Standard  Vanguard.

The  guy in the tower controlled the  trains.
  The  fuel pumps operated by hand pumping the fuel  into the glass tanks at the top  that had  gallons marked on  them.
  When  you turned the lever the fuel would siphon into  your tank.
  The  trigger was a later  addition.
See  the Flying Red horse?  That's Mobil.   RPM is Caltex.
  One  could sell any brand of fuel and oil at the servo.
Hence  the sign "This Pump Please" That's the fuel the  servo got the best deal on  for
The  Price War.
Brands  were separated into different  tanks.

With  pedestrians crossing the road, all the Trains,  automobiles, trams and bicycles  had
  To  stop.  They were the days when a pretty  girl could hold up the  lot.
A  Dodge/International small truck had a Chrysler  Slant 6 petrol engine out of a Valliant  car.

That first photo looks more like the Ipswich road crossing near where the Balaclava st intersection is.

That is the Logan Road crossing . The street on the right rear is Trafalgar Street...

I think you are spot on.. I remember it as the Railway Hotel.

If you look very carefully above the word Castlemaine in the original picture you can just see the words (somebody's name) Railway Hotel.
Also visible around the top of the building and on the top front facade.

pedestrians coming out of the gabba busway have pretty much the same view today.

moreton rubberworks building est 1890 and still going strong today lol. I wonder if the owners plan on doing anything with it or just let it serve as a memorial to the old days.

The building behind the 'railway crossing' sign was still there when I started driving buses. I used to get fish n chips from there during meal breaks ( pre busway ).
The train is exiting what is now the Gabba Busway portal.
You can see the trolley bus wires above the train.

The 'guy in the tower' was the tramway signalman. My dad worked at the 'Gabba as a flagman at one time. One of the cops from the 'Gabba police station, (two storey building visible in the turntable pic) said to him once, "If some b....d in a car comes too close, throw the bell thru his windscreen and say it slipped out of your hand.'

Assuming they don't take zero harm to the next level and ban photography in underground stations like Metro have.

Heh, they'll never stop people with phones, and by 2020+ I expect you'll be able to get real-time capture of anything that passes through a smart pair of sunglasses.
