Albert Bridge Painting and Maintenance

Project update

Queensland Rail is carrying out essential bridge painting and maintenance at the Albert Bridge, Indooroopilly to improve reliability and operational safety on the Ipswich/Springfield line in South East Queensland.

The Albert Bridge is a heritage listed structure comprising two 100m spans that carry the rail lines across the Brisbane River between Indooroopilly and Chelmer stations. First constructed in 1875 and destroyed in the 1893 floods, the bridge was completely rebuilt and reopened in 1895.

Queensland Rail has contracted Eptec Services to deliver this essential maintenance program to prolong the life of the steel structure.  Works began in December 2015 and are expected to be complete by August 2016, weather permitting.

The site compound is located on Queensland Rail property at the Chelmer end of Albert Bridge.  The local community may notice increased vehicle movements around the bridge, contractors parking in local streets and occasional traffic management along Wharf Street.  The Walter Taylor vehicle bridge and Jack Pesch footbridge will not be affected by these works.

Scaffolding has been erected around the bridge and best work practices are being used to protect the river environment while maintenance and painting is conducted.

It is just amazing to think that these bridges are still around from the late 1800s and that the steel in them hasn't rusted away after all that time!

Paint is a wonderful thing for keeping the rust at bay.
