Couriermail Quest --> Query over Deception Bay bus interchange project's 'high price tag'

QuoteMURRUMBA state Labor MP Chris Whiting has defended the cost of a $4.9 million bus interchange being built at Deception Bay, saying design changes had cut $800,000 off the price tag.

Mr Whiting's comments follow concerns of Deception Bay resident Barry Grant who said the original $5.7 million price tag of the project at Bay Ave had left him "gobsmacked".

"I posted the amount on social media sites of several community groups and most were taken aback by the cost," Mr Grant said.

"People were asking if it was made of gold or came with a helipad."

Mr Grant said he asked Moreton Bay Regional Council and Mr Whiting's office about the cost, and the new figure of $4.9 million had not changed his view.

He questioned why the amount had dropped by $800,000. He said he had asked Transport and Main Roads Minister Jackie Trad's office to erect a sign telling residents how much it was costing, but was waiting for a response.

Mr Whiting said the Deception Bay Bus Station was a significant investment in public transport. He did not provide a breakdown of the project's costs, as requested by the Herald.

"The cost saving on the Deception Bay Bus Station is due to a refinement in the project design, which excluded a land resumption included in the original project scope," he said.

The station will include an 86m platform, high-quality shelter, covered walkway, seating, passenger information, a Go Card top-up machine and links to the statewide Go Card system, and security cameras.
