Pros:
OPEX savings from train dead running
Noise reduction from reducing late night/early morning movements Sandgate-Mayne
OPEX savings from positioning crew based at Shorncliffe to operational locations, probably Bowen Hills
Holds two more trains which reduces pressure on other stabling - the need for this was cited as a reason for Redbank

Cons:
Noise from shunting 2nd last train into stabling road/from stabling road for day's 2nd train
Increased security expense

-
I think the noise argument against cannot be sustained.  Why's it OK to drag a train to/from Mayne in the middle of the night creating noise affect 1000+ people but it's not OK to create noise affecting probably a few dozen.

I expect security is a good enough reason.  If this happens, you will be able to identify the out-stabled trains pretty easily by the persistent vandalism.  Having walked adjacent to the stabling road, it would require a fair bit of work for only limited benefit.

If you needed to stable anything near Shorncliffe, Banyo would be the place to do it I would think.

There have been complaints from residents about noise with Redbank Stabling.

Never going happen at Shorncliffe, for both noise and security reasons.

Noise is a feeble reason, as I point out in the OP.  It's only about 200m from where trains are running normally and it reduces noise for the majority.

Not. Gonna. Happen. In. A. Million. Years.

Security would be waaayyyyy to much for stabling a crummy 2 trains. Trains already get vandalised there while they are stationary at the platform while the driver swaps ends. Anyway, stabling at Shorncliffe got canned when the Banyo workshops was reserved to be a stabling yard during the NGR/future rollingstock rollouts/Northgate peak hour terminus.

Manly only has 3 trains.

Redbank should never have happened until they finished the Robina stabling.

Petrie also fits only 3x 6-car trains total as well. (2 on the south yard (facing towards the City) and 1 on the north yard (facing towards further North))

So what if Manly has stabling for 2x 6 car trains? Manly isn't Shorncliffe. I don't recall any large stabling facilities (12-14x 6 car sets) proposed just down the road from Manly.

Petrie only accepts 5x 3 car trains. A majority of the services dead run from other Bowen Hills terminators to Petrie forming morning peak hour services. The northern yard (1x6 car max) is used by a arvo Petrie terminator with the Southern yard (1x9 car max) used by a dead running service to/from Caboolture. Both of them will be removed in 2013-2015 and relocated to the 12x 6 car stabling at Kippa Ring.

Who cares about what is proposed?  Railways need to work with what is THERE.

HappyTrainGuy

Ummm.... you do know that THERE'S NOTHING THERE! The stabling area can only hold 1x6 car set (Not 2) for stabling due to track access paths/overrun/signaling. I'm guessing they would be using the money that seems to be growing on the trees there to employ security overnight, clean off all the constant graffiti or using that same money on the tree to upgrade the fences, added lighting, CCTV, track access gates via signaling etc. Then there is the second platform. Please just use common sense when it comes to honestly expecting stuff when there are other plans in motion.

What's next? Bringing back the triangle siding at Sunshine to hold one train?

The second train is at the platform.  It was good enough once upon a time.

Times change. Once upon a time trains weren't vandalised like they are now. Once upon a time trains didn't advertise how to open the doors illegally from the outside. Once upon a time vandals didn't have keys to the trains.

Agree, when I first came to Brisbane I was a bit confused why they stored nearly all the trains at Mayne, it now makes common sense. The less depos the better/cheaper.
I think Sydney style (all outstabling) make far more sense than Brisbane style (mainly central stabling).  The outstabling depots in Sydney reach a critical mass that the security costs aren't too high, and it saves scads in dead/empty running.

ozbob

Melbourne has moved to outstabling as well ...

QR is doing the same FYI. Just been lacking the funds for it ;)

SurfRail

Melbourne only did that to get rid of the Jolimont yard, otherwise I expect they would still be using it.

Sydney has never had decent near-city facilities except for the fairly limited car sheds at Redfern.  Plus they are able to use Central(i) (how I hate that term!) to store trains during the day.

Sydney now has additionally the Macdonaldtown stabling yards, although it is unclear where the benefit of these yards comes in.  What do the crews do?  I don't think they are used for overnight stabling so there is a net imbalance of crews.

Derwan

Perhaps it should be part of a re-design of the whole station - with a second platform added and several roads for stabling.  Security would be added as part of the station upgrade.  This would kill two birds with one stone (limitations to frequency and stabling).

While we're at it, demolish the golf course and put in higher density residential units, which would be far more logical to have beside a train station.  The new station could have access to that side via a new bridge that replaces the one that they've now closed.

OR - we can just leave the station the way it is and let it rot - gradually closing more of it until Sandgate becomes the end of the line.  :)
