Sunshine Coast mayoral candidate Mark Jamieson has promised to work closely with the state government to increase public transport services on the Sunshine Coast, if he is elected to the top job on Saturday.

Mr Jamieson said the previous council had delivered a range of new services for the region over the last four years and he was keen to continue their efforts in this area.

"Improvements to public transport services were a priority for the first regional council and we have seen a number of initiatives such as council cabs, flexilink services and additional bus routes added during the last term," Mr Jamieson said.

"I am aware that the former council pledged $100 million over five years for public transport throughout the region and I support that approach.

"Providing adequate public transport to service the Sunshine Coast will be an ongoing challenge and requires close collaboration with the other levels of government and the state government in particular.

Mr Jamieson said under the previous government the timeline for the delivery of key projects was pushed back.

"We now have the opportunity for a fresh start to ensure these much-needed additional services are rolled out in a timely fashion to support the needs of current and future residents."

Mr Jamieson said an ongoing commitment to improved public transport was needed to prevent future gridlock in population centres across the Sunshine Coast.

He said with numerous job-creating projects underway or soon to commence, including the new CBD at Maroochydore, the hospital and health hub at Kawana and the technology precinct at Sippy Downs, it was essential that services were available to allow workers to travel to and from these areas with ease.

Mr Jamieson added that hinterland communities must not be forgotten, where some residents remained completely reliant on private vehicles.

"That can leave some members of the community socially isolated and with very limited opportunities to pursue employment or study," he said.

"Better public transport is needed not only to protect our reputation as a clean, green region, but to build and maintain social cohesion.

"I am committed to working closely with the state government to enhance the services currently available and to ensure those long-promised but yet-to-materialise new services are provided as quickly as possible.

Topic was a total dissapointment, you all know why.

Fares_Fair

He is merely committing to current plans and is clearly reliant upon the State Government.
Having said that, I don't follow your comment Gazza.

Mr Jamieson would be better off liaising with the federal government on these matters.  The latest from the state government, albeit from spokespersons other than the Transport Minister, is that the LNP will try and beat the ALP latest deadline for the SCL duplication, namely 2031.  Track duplication to Nambour by 2030?  Big deal.
