Canberra's $8 million MyWay ticketing system is being used on more than 300,000 bus journeys a week.

Marking its first year of full operation, Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said today MyWay had proved to be a resounding success.

It made bus travel easier and cheaper for the vast majority of passengers.

Payment options included direct debit, BPAY, online, cash, credit card and EFTPOS.

Ms Gallagher said the MyWay system had proved to be very reliable. It was providing valuable data on travel patterns which would be used to help build future bus networks.

Unlike difficulties with smart-card ticketing systems in Sydney and Melbourne, there had been only minimal teething issues with MyWay. More than 98 per cent of passengers were tagging off, which gave them significant fare discounts while providing important travel data.

Other possible uses for MyWay included enabling cards to access bike-and-bus storage cages.

Canberra is a nice model of how a small city can do better at PT. They've re-worked the network, MyWay works really well and they're rolling out a very interesting bicycle-bus system where a lot of bike racks are being placed next to bus stops in order to boost the catchment areas.
