BULIMBA will finally have its new ferry terminal, with the LNP council agreeing to start work immediately if re-elected at the local government poll on April 28.

After 18 months of delays caused by political brawling and the January 2011 floods, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has vowed to give the dilapidated terminal a much-needed redevelopment.

The heritage-listed terminal cannot cope with the 8000 commuters who use Oxford St every week, trying to take the CityCat to work.

The $5 million upgrade will deliver a second terminal that will allow two ferries to dock at once.

It will also bring the site up to Disability-Act compliancy and double the size of the existing waiting area to hold about 130 passengers.

"If re-elected on April 28, I will begin building this terminal straight away using council's existing design," Cr Quirk said.

LNP candidate for Morningside ward, Bradley Dean, said the project was one of his top priorities.

"I decided to throw my hat in the ring to ensure important projects such as this are delivered," he said.

The ALP's Morningside councillor, Shayne Sutton, has also promised to deliver the terminal, albeit with a different design, should Labor win the election.

IF elected, will they propose to scrap the Maroon CityGlider and instead fund a BUZ or BulimbaGlider through Bulimba?
The new terminal is purely 'more concrete' not a service boost... the dual berth will help. Will it have a GoCard/AVVM machine?

Say what? per week? That's only 1500 pax per day - a frequent bus can do that in ONE hour.

Does it need it?  I though CityCats had AVVMs on board.

This has been an overdue project for about 5 years and constantly delayed because of the Ward being an ALP one.  A great example of where politics has been put before our city.  Elect none of them!!

Good point. That said though, there are 3 staff on board, with AVVMs at all terminals, there would there be a need for a ticket seller?
Staff would go from 3/vehicle to 2/vehicle. This changes the cost equation which could mean more and later services, depending on the price of AVVM machines vs staff salaries...

Existing staff could be re-trained as deck hands or captains as more stops will mean more ferry services are needed as the timetable will be slower with more stops...

You wonder why they don't extend it to buses...

Why does it need to be rebuilt, the current terminal is beautiful, why remove it for some boing modern shed.
"Where else but Queensland?"

I think theyd build a new, higher capacity one next to it for heritage reasons.
The old berth might just have some park benches put on or something.

SEQ: Core Frequent Network - Council Elections 2012: Bulimba Ferry Terminal Upgrade

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers has welcomed the proposed Bulimba Ferry Terminal Upgrade.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"RAIL Back On Track welcomes commitments to upgrade the Bulimba Ferry Terminal. In particular, better cycling storage facilities should be provided as the catchment area for the terminal is rather limited to walk-up patronage only."

"However, the upgrade itself is a facilities upgrade, and as such, does not increase the catchment area, service frequency or span of services to the Bulimba area. Due to the limited and separate catchment areas of the ferry and bus services, residents of Hawthorne, Bulimba and Balmoral, particularly the inland parts near Riding and Thynne Roads will still be in a public transport 'no go' zone, even after this upgrade. Similar 'no go' zones exist in the Centenary Suburbs and the Northwest."

"We, along with Bulimba residents, have highlighted the problems (1). In 2009, Bulimba residents told Brisbane City Council's neighbourhood planning team about car congestion on Wynnum Road, Hawthorne Ferry being parked out, the frequency of all bus services needing improvement and that the cars were eroding the vibrancy of Oxford Street with people parking across driveways and excluding parking for residents' visitors (2). It seems that no action has been taken on these concerns, and indeed, residents' concerns were publicly rejected (3)."

"RAIL Back On Track again calls on all Lord Mayoral candidates to download the 230/235 bus timetable from the TransLink website to see just how feeble and unconvincing claims that Bulimba is already 'well served' are (4,5). St Lucia, West End, New Farm and Tennerrife all enjoying coverage by ferry and frequent bus, and this needs to extend to Bulimba."

"Lord Mayoral candidates need to consider funding a 'BulimbaGlider' service or BUZ service in the area, which would connect Bulimba to a larger 'Core Frequent Network' connecting Brisbane suburbs to the CBD, and the suburbs with each other, and allowing anywhere-to-anywhere travel at almost any time of the day over the entire city with minimal wait. We don't want to see Bulimba miss out on that."

"As RAIL Back On Track has always said, services must be frequent, bottom line!"

only an occasional PT user now!

Refusal to BUZ the 230 is holding up connecting Balmoral, Bulimba, Hawthorne and East Brisbane to to the CFN!
