QUEENSLAND Rail National, the company which runs uncovered coal wagons to the Port of Brisbane, says they are fulfilling all of their regulatory and environmental responsibilities.

State Member for Yeerongpilly Simon Finn said DERM required some coal wagons to be sprayed with a protective veneer prior to transporting, ``a minimum requirement'' for wagons.

QR National was responding to concerns by Greens candidate Jo Bragg (South Brisbane) and residents about pollution and health risks associated with uncovered coal wagons.

"The majority of coal transported through this corridor is washed at the mine to minimise coal dust," a QR National spokeswoman said.

"Recent independent dust monitoring along the corridor showed no increased level of dust as a result of QR National's operations."

Woolloongabba resident Val Vlasenco contacted Premier Anna Bligh.

"The dust in the house is phenomenal. You can dust in the morning and in the afternoon it is all back again," Mrs Vlasenco said.

Another southside resident, Peta Weatherley, added it had "long angered me that the coal trains are able to move through densely populated areas uncovered when road freight is covered".

LNP candidate for Yeerongpilly Carl Judge said he would "work with locals to find commonsense solutions to issues like this one and an LNP Government won't avoid the tough issues".

State Member for Yeerongpilly Simon Finn said DERM required some coal wagons to be sprayed with a protective veneer prior to transporting, ``a minimum requirement'' for wagons''.

"I want all coal wagons to be covered by protective lids and will keep working to ensure this is delivered.

"Operators must take all reasonable and practicable measures to minimise environmental nuisance.''

However, Ms Bragg said Labor had had decades to ensure wagons were covered.
