CENTRAL and western Queenslanders may have been left stranded by the collapse of Paradise Coaches and Taxis, but Greyhound Australia has provided a lifeline to commuters from Longreach to the coast.

QuoteParadise Coaches had for a long time been the only option for people needing to travel between Rockhampton, Mackay, Emerald and Longreach.

Central Highlands Mayor Peter Maguire said the company's recent closure could leave many communities high and dry.

"Naturally the council is concerned at the loss of any service to Central Highlands residents and visitors," Cr Maguire said.

"The loss of this service may impact vulnerable groups without ready access to private transport, such as older people, people with disabilities and those on lower incomes."

The council has been looking at finding options to assist people who are reliant on long-distance public transport.

"This has been identified as an issue for some time, but the solutions are not easily found," Cr Maguire said.

Fortunately, however, Greyhound Australia has recently begun providing services from Rockhampton to Emerald seven days a week, with connections to Longreach two days a week in partnership with QConnect.

These services will be available until May next year, allowing people to make trips over Christmas.

No surprise with paradise coaches.
