A Federal Government study will help decide whether an inland rail corridor should be built to link Melbourne and Brisbane.

The $15 million study will examine the exact route, cost, benefits and environmental impact of the rail link, which would cut the journey time by 15 hours.

Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese says the Government will be advised by August next year how the project should proceed.

"This study will enable a proper assessment of whether it is a feasible project or not, once and for all, and if it is a feasible project, what are the financing mechanisms to turn it into a reality,'' he said.

I remember reading a submission by the Coles group to a study about an inland rail link from Melbourne to Brisbane. IIRC if they got the travel time below a certain value Coles said they would be all over it like a rash.
