GrainCorp opens Queensland's largest malting facility

Barrett Burston Malting, a wholly owned subsidiary of GrainCorp, is officially opening Queensland's largest malting facility on Thursday November 24. The plant at Pinkenba is the first to be built in the State in more than forty years and the event will be attended by Queensland Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for State Development and Trade, Andrew Fraser MP.
Tracing its heritage back to the 1860s, Barrett Burston Malting recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and has twice expanded its operations this year – first with the acquisition of a malt house in Western Australia, and now with this new facility in Pinkenba on the north side of the Brisbane River.

Creating new opportunities for the Queensland economy, the $80 million facility is expected to expand the market for Queensland barley growers and the opportunity to service growing demand for malt in the Asian market.
'
The malting plant will convert barley from Queensland and northern NSW into high quality brewing malt, with around 50% of the production supplied to Foster's Yatala brewery and the remainder exported through the Port of Brisbane to major brewers in Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

As well as creating new jobs at the plant itself, this new facility will generate a flow-on effect for employment in related sectors including shipping and transport, and local businesses associated with the facility in industries such as maintenance, engineering and freight.

The new Barrett Burston malt house, which uses the latest technology and processing methods in all aspects of the design, including safety operations, has an annual capacity of 86,000 tonnes and is the culmination of five years of negotiation, planning and construction.

The malting facility is adjacent to a GrainCorp grain handling and storage terminal, into which GrainCorp has invested $12.5 million. This investment has allowed for major refurbishment of storage and handling equipment, thereby providing Barrett Burston with an additional 12,500 tonnes of storage capacity which can receive grain by ship, rail or road.

"Construction of the Pinkenba malt house commenced in 2009 and this allowed the regeneration of our Pinkenba site," says GrainCorp Chairman Don Taylor.

"The decision to locate the malt house here was based on the close working relationship GrainCorp and Barrett Burston Malting have built over many years. This has allowed us to locate, design and construct this malt house and integrate it into GrainCorp's Brisbane-based operations, both here at Pinkenba and across the river at Fisherman Islands.

"This malt house will capture the value of combining GrainCorp's grain business and Barrett Burston's malt processing business."

Further facts:

GrainCorp purchased Barrett Burston Malting – along with Bairds Malt in the UK, Great Western Malting in the USA and Canada Malting in Canada – in November 2009, but their relationship goes back to 1985, when Barrett Burston built its Geelong malting plant alongside the GrainCorp port elevator. Construction of the Pinkenba malt house began in August 2009.
As well as Pinkenba, Barrett Burston Malting has malting facilities in Geelong (Victoria), Burnley (Melbourne), Thornleigh (Sydney), and Welshpool (Perth). Its annual production capacity is approximately 290,000 tonnes per year, representing 30% of Australia's total malt production.
Barrett Burston Malting supplies Pale malts, Wheat, Crystal and Dark Roasted malts to Australia's largest domestic and regional brewers, the craft brewing market and for export to Asia.

Have been told it has departed Pinkenba and is currently stopped at Eagle Farm waiting out a closure, due to depart around 1430.

Well, they weren't doing maintenance recently for nothing it seems.  Hopefully we get some regular traffic back there.

Quick Press Release highligting how many trucks will not have been on our roads and maybe more freight should be moved this way to get trucks out of congested traffic?

Well that train load alone took the equivalent of some 41 to 42 B Double trips off the roads alone.

Anyone know how long since grain has been railed into Pinkenba, and is this event going to be regular from here?

No idea how long it's been (many years I think!) but this one was a trial at this stage. No more scheduled at this stage AFAIK.

Rail freight returns to Pinkenba

Greetings,

Yesterday a QRN grain train delivered grain to GrainCorp at Pinkenba by rail.

This is the first freight train to use the line for many years.  The train would have been the equivalent of around 40 B-double trucks, trucks removed from the road network.  A much better outcome for our community to have bulk freight on rail than on the roads.

We hope that this is the beginning of a return to using our rail freight asset for a better sustainable transport future for Queensland.

Best wishes
Robert
