Indooroopilly shopping centre is set for a major facelift, with a $450 million expansion green lit by planning authorities.

Eureka Funds Management, who manages the superannuation trust which holds a 50 per cent share in the centre, announced development approval had been obtained and work on the 30,000 square metre addition would begin within the first quarter of this year.

Once the expansion is completed, the shopping centre will have 115,000 square metres of retail space, with around 340 retailers.

Currently, Indooroopilly houses 250 retailers.

David Jones will move into the centre, while the existing Myer department store will be reconfigured over two floors.

A new mall and food court, as well as extra car parks and an upgrade to the external walls and existing retail precincts are included in the plans.

Eureka Funds Management managing director Bob Kelly said the expansion and upgrade had been in the works for years, with his team working with the Brisbane City Council and "various" state government agencies to have the plans approved.

The shopping centre expansion is another boost for the area and follows the announcement of a draft neighbour plan by Brisbane City Council late last year.

Under the council plan, buildings of up to 20 storeys will be allowed near the shopping centre and rail station complex, while the western side of Witton Barracks and the Walter Taylor Bridge was set aside for "future transport infrastructure."

Indooroopilly Shopping Centre was opened in the 1970s.

So. No new bus interchange eh?
Looks that way.  :thsdo  I'd really like one up the Myer end rather than the quite annoying loop that I/B buses have to do.

It might need a second flyover though.

They'd better do an Aldi finally!
Aldi have advised me that they are going to open a store in Redbank in the second half of this year. I have unofficially been told that Supa IGA is going to vacate its location in Redbank Plaza & Aldi are going to open there. However, the Aldi supermarket will not be as large as the current Supa IGA, because Coles is to expand into part of the existing Supa IGA.

It will be nice to see some real competition to the Coles Myer stores in Redbank Plaza - Coles, Kmart & Target.

So... retailers are QQing that they can't compete with online shopping and times are tough, but somehow an extra 100 shops at this cathedral of consumption are justified? Complete with extra car parking and presumably without upgrade to the surrounding transport infrastructure.

Methinks it is time to start a self-managed super fund.  :thsdo

I think it is good that the centre will expand, although the current bus station is pretty non-convenient (buses have to do loops around the place and it seems to be reaching capacity). There also needs to be more space for bus layover.

One of the positives of the expansion is that it is moving closer to the railway station. Perhaps, the next, or a later expansion will involve a pedestrian link from the railway station over/under Coonan St directly into the centre.
