I think it is quite amazing you can put your car on the train. Where else in the world does that happen?

You can do it on the Indian Pacific also.  Not sure about the Overland, but I think it's available on the Ghan - Not 100% sure though.

Tilts also don't transport your car, provide sleeping facilities, wash facilities (Only on the CTT) and carry goods to some locations.
Yeah, but the point I'm making is, why does the Government have to be in those businesses?
Indeed they are being tilted, but honestly, they could have used the extra sets to do a 7 day per week tilt service instead

Because no one else provides any similar rail service in Queensland along in conjuction with it falling under Queensland Rail's TravelTrain service. Say someone wants to provide a passenger and motorail service between Brisbane and Cairns. They have to buy rollingstock, then they have to get all their accrediation in order for rollingstock/track cred/Government cred under the transport act/multiple insurances/etc, provide maintainence facilities, pay for crew at stations that they stop at along the 1600km journey, pay track usage fees to QR, set up the customer service side of the business and the list goes on an on. GSR want very little to do with Queensland due to the fact it has to acquire all new rollingstock for them to use on the narrow gauge. Pacific National can't spare any locos as their handfull of narrow gauge locos are for their freight and coal business. QRN want very little to do with the passenger side as there's no money in it for them. Its also a very high chance that with the new Sunlander tilt it won't be taking cars or extra goods to some towns/stations. You axe these services and who else is going to step up to the plate? Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

And what do you mean extra sets. The whole fleet is constantly running. The Cairns Tilt has had one service operating since December 2008 after the fatal level crossing accident and subsequent write off of the lead loco while the ETT already provide a daily service running out of Brisbane.

@ FF - Yep, that's what it looks like on the current Sunlander/Spirit of the Outback.
@ TT - GSR and just look at their prices  ::) How many tourists are going to fork out the crazy amount it costs. $600 from Adelaide to Alice Springs plus your train ticket.

I thought they got rid of the motorail service?  Or did they bring it back?

See what happens when people think without being aware of the facts, the motorail service was withdrawan while the waggons were modified to overcome design faults then reinstated, usually well utilised and adds to the revenue stream.

What's your point?  I don't think it was a stupid question.

According to Wikipedia at least, there are motorail services in Europe, Chile and the US (between Lorton, VA and Sanford, FL).

Chilean ones would be defunct I think.  I believe they used to offer motorail on the Santiago to Puerto Montt service, but that ceased running a few years ago.
