Just heard a report on ABC Radio News to the effect that Transit Officers are threatening industrial action (no active issuing of warnings or fines) next month following a proposal by Queensland Rail to cut back numbers.  Sure there will be more on this to come.

You mean the ones that have Security on their back that sometimes stand talking to each other while some ferrals constantly sniff a brown paper bag in the next car?

They are private security guards.  Transit Officers are Queensland Rail staff that wear a white shirt, dark trousers and check tickets and so forth.  Not to be further confused with Senior Network Officers (complete dark uniform) who are TransLink staff that also check tickets and so forth, but have some detention powers as well.

Shouldn't they be paid for by translink though as they are checking for translink issued tickets?

They are indirectly, but it is historical.  The TOs were part of Queensland Rail prior to TransLink ...

NSW: 2 - CityRail TOs and State Transit Inspectors; Not sure about private security
VIC: 1 - Although, each operator employs its own authorised officers so you have staff from at least 3 different entities there (MTM, Yarra Trams, Grendas); Again, not sure about private security
WA: 3 - Transit Guards, Revenue Protection Officers and private security
SA: 2 - Ticket Inspectors and private security
NT: 1 - Transit Officers; Possibly private security
ACT/TAS: None AFAIK

I suppose there are the STA inspectors in NSW, but you won't find these co existing with TOs, unlike in SEQ.  Not sure if they have security powers.

There's no private security on trains anymore.  Never seen any on a bus either.

In NSW also add the dedicated Railway Police Unit

Aren't they regular police?

Encountered two plain clothes TOs inbound around Gailes today.  Then two SNOs around Sherwood.  Must have been an extensive check ...

TOs were checking tickets, the SNOs were just moving through the train.
