Sunshine Coast public transport
Express your interest to join a Community Reference Group

A Community Reference Group (CRG) is being formed to better understand key issues, encourage community input, and foster greater collaboration and transparency.

TMR recognises that the Sunshine Coast is diverse and so too are its residents' travel requirements. It is important that the needs of everyone in the community are carefully weighed up when it comes to considering options for a public transport system.

TMR is currently seeking expressions of interest from members of diverse demographics and backgrounds located within the project area (between Maroochydore and Caloundra) to represent the interests and voices of the following groups:

accessibility
business advocacy
community interest/action
education
health
residential (suburbs between Maroochydore and Caloundra)
tourism
youth

Question on Notice
No. 864
Asked on 16 June 2023

MS F SIMPSON ASKED MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT AND MAIN ROADS AND MINISTER
FOR DIGITIAL SERVICES (HON M BAILEY)

QUESTION:

With reference to the Expressions of Interest closing on 11 December 2022 and advice that the
membership for the Sunshine Coast Public Transport Strategy Community Reference Group
(CRG) will be announced in early 2023—
Will the Minister confirm when the CRG membership will be announced and when they will first
meet?

ANSWER:

I thank the Member for Maroochydore for the question.

I can confirm that the Community Reference Group (CRG) for the Sunshine Coast Public
Transport project will not be established as initially planned. Instead, a series of stakeholder
interest groups (SIG) will be formed to focus on public transport and rail projects for the Sunshine
Coast.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has invited a wide range of key
stakeholders and interest groups to participate in these SIGs. This includes applicants who
expressed interest in being part of the CRG. TMR looks forward to working with these groups in
the coming months as planning for these important public transport and rail projects progresses.

I applied for this back in November last year.
I wondered what had happened to it.
Had heard nothing and it was supposed to be notified by early this year.

Received an email notification today about the change in status.

Thank you for expressing your interest in joining a Community Reference Group (CRG) for the Sunshine Coast Public Transport project.

We appreciate the time taken to submit your application and for your keen interest in being involved in the Business Case process.

In light of the number of public transport projects being considered for the Sunshine Coast region, including the Sunshine Coast Public Transport (SCPT) project, the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line and Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has decided to adopt a more comprehensive approach towards community engagement.

This will allow a wider range of community members to work through key areas of interest in combination with other related projects.

There are several public transport projects, including heavy rail, in planning and delivery that will deliver significant benefits to the Sunshine Coast and change the way residents and visitors travel throughout it. It is important our community understands the full picture of public transport projects being planned and how each are linked and integrated.

A series of stakeholder interest groups will be established to provide feedback on the transport projects. The stakeholder interest groups will involve more people, getting information about public transport projects being planned for the Sunshine Coast, and offer greater opportunities to provide valuable feedback to inform planning for our future public transport network.

The groups will focus on key interest areas including:
-          Environment
-          Accessibility
-          Community Interest
-          Emergency Services and Health
-          Youth.

While the Sunshine Coast Public Transport (SCPT) project CRG won't proceed, all applications received will be considered for involvement in the stakeholder interest groups and invitations will be extended to other key stakeholders and groups across the region to ensure diverse interests and opinions are represented.

Invitations to those selected to participate will soon be issued.

Other opportunities to be involved and to have your say on Sunshine Coast Public Transport and other projects will also be available throughout the business case phase. You can currently have your say on this project and others with community consultation currently underway.

Once again, thank you for your interest and willingness to be involved.

Regards,
