The Peninsula's busiest bus station will be improved with a new $4million station at the Peninsula Fair Shopping Centre at Kippa-Ring.

State Member for Redcliffe, Lillian van Litsenburg said the new station was planned for the existing car park next to Suncorp Bank, at the Anzac Avenue end of the shopping centre.

"Peninsula Fair Shopping Centre is a convenient key community destination and this new station will make travel easier for the growing community around Redcliffe, Kippa-Ring, Margate and Woody Point," Lillian said.

"Almost 3000 people a week catch buses from this station currently. The new station ensures the growing needs of the local community will be catered for and better integrates shopping centre precinct."

Lillian welcomed the station upgrade and improvement in Redcliffe public transport. "This is great news for local residents across Kippa-Ring and the Peninsula," Lillian said.

"The new station will feature four bus bays, improved access for people with disabilities and easier access for buses and vehicles in and out of the shopping centre.

"This means improved service reliability for local residents as there will be a designated turnaround so buses can get in and out of the shopping centre more easily than before.

"The new station will also feature comfortable waiting areas, improved pedestrian and cycle access, bicycle storage and improved safety with lighting & CCTV monitoring."

Lillian said the station design would be finalised mid-year with building to start by the end of the year and the station to open mid next year.

"These improvements to the bus interchange are part of my vision for a vastly improved integrated public transport system on the Peninsula."

What is the Peninsula Fair station project?
The Peninsula Fair station is part of TransLink's $44 million Station Upgrade Program aimed at making travel easy. The new station will be located in the shopping centre car park, opposite the Anzac Avenue/Kappella Street Intersection. It will feature an island platform and will replace the two existing bus stops on Anzac Avenue.

Bus services currently using the on-road bus stops will use the new station. The bus stop located directly outside the shopping centre doors, adjacent to the cinemas, will remain and be upgraded.

The new Peninsula Fair station will provide:

•fully sheltered passenger waiting areas with comfortable seating
•capacity for four buses within the new island platform bus station
•capacity for two buses at the existing bus stop adjacent to the shopping centre entrance door
•priority access for buses to and from Anzac Avenue
•high quality pedestrian connections including disability access
•bike storage for cyclists
•landscaping with mature plantings
•security cameras, lighting and other safety features.

What are the benefits of the new station?
The new Peninsula Fair station will:

•provide safe, high quality waiting facilities for the comfort of passengers
•improve public transport efficiency and allow for future network growth in the area
•improve access for passengers and integrate with the shopping centre and surrounding areas
•encourage more people to use public transport.

Why is it needed?
The Peninsula Fair station will provide a high quality bus station that meets growing passenger demands and capacity requirements for future growth along our network.

TransLink is progressively upgrading bus stations and stops throughout the public transport network, with the aim of providing passengers with efficient and reliable public transport services, as well as comfortable, safe and convenient facilities.

A feasibility study has confirmed the need to construct the station for the shopping centre precinct to:

•improve passenger safety with more security surveillance
•improve shared access to and around the bus stop facilities between buses, taxis and general traffic
•ensure the bus station is compliant with the TransLink Public Transport Infrastructure Manual, which includes disability discrimination access compliance
•improve pedestrian connectivity between the bus station and the shopping centre.

How will this affect me?

Construction

A construction management plan will be developed to minimise impacts during construction.

We will make every effort to notify affected stakeholders prior to the commencement of any works and minimise disruptions wherever possible.

Services
There will be no disruptions to timetables of existing bus services during construction of the new station. One of the benefits of the new station's location is that it allows for unobstructed bus operations throughout construction.

One completed, there may be minor route access changes to allow existing bus services to integrate and use the new bus facility. Currently, buses either pass or enter the shopping centre site. Once the new bus station is operational, all buses will enter the new bus station site within the shopping centre precinct.

Will there be a Go Card machine?

One would assume so, but they don't say anything about it. I'm more interested in knowing how this is going to work with the Kippa Ring station which is just around the corner. I don't want to see them do another Indooroopilly where the buses all go to the shops and ignore the train station thats ~600m away.

Reference design shows 4 bus stands at Kippa-Ring on what I believe is now Kroll Street (2 on either side).  I expect you may see buses coming from the Rothwell direction to turn right into Hercules Road and go to Peninsula Fair via the station that way, and back in the same direction, presumably with all the Peninsula Fair local terminating and loop services being rerouted to include the railway.

Ahhhk. Cool. Not sure if you'd see all buses terminating at the shops extended though. Thats not what happened with the Brookside/Mitchelton station bus stops.

If there isn't one at Indooroopilly interchange, then perhaps not.  I'm not sure if machines are present at Garden City, Chermside or Carindale either.

Golliwog

Almost certain theres one at Chermside and Garden City. I thought there was one at Indro?

Pretty sure theres one at Brookside.

I don't think there's a Go Card machine at Garden City interchange (upstairs) however there are Go Card machines at Upper Mount Gravatt Busway Station (downstairs).

There is one upstairs.  Near Stop 'D' IIRC.  I've used it many times in the past.

So it's Indooroopilly that is the laggard?  Are you expected to walk up to the train station?

I think you're expected to use the newsagent inside the shopping center that does go-card things. Don't think theres a sign pointing this out or anything though.

I was at Indro just this week to have a look around and was shocked that there was no go card AAVM there. Seems very strange!

Bulimba30A

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Toombul has a go card machine at the bus station but the newsagent inside the centre cannot get top up capability because of the go card machine.

ozbob

Same deal at Oxley.  In this case the AVVM on the rail station prevents the newsagent doing topups.  It is related to the cost of the equipment.  There was some thought going into a shared expense franchise business model or something similar, but I think it has fallen over.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
