Yesterday on the trip to Gympie North the notion that we have semi-regular outings to explore different modes and routes not always travelled by those interested be planned.

Any ideas for say outings on Saturdays and/or Sundays.  Probably best at weekends as not everyone can get away during the week.

I think a good one for those who don't normally get out west would be Central to Richlands with a stop at Corinda to see the basic track setup.  Back to Darra,  check out Darra. Darra to Rosewood - lunch.  And then back to Ipswich and or home.

I would be happy to host a Gold Coast one or two - maybe we could even venture "beyond the red line" into the Tweed and compare service levels ...

It is possible to do a run from Brisbane to Maleny on a Sunday, transferring to a bus at Landsborough Station, after arriving at 10.54am.  Time in Maleny -- 11.08am to 1.27pm (including lunch at any one of several venues).  Return journey: 1.27pm at Maleny, 1.41pm at Landsborough and 3.56pm at Central.  This train continues to Ipswich.

How about venturing over the border to Kingscliff or Pottsville?

These times are for a SUNDAY timetable.

Outbound journey:

CityTrain: :lo
   Roma St                         9.27 AM
  Varsity Lakes                  10:45 AM

Change to Surfside bus lines, route 761: :bu
   Varsity Lakes Station          10:56 AM
Tweed Heads, Wharf St          11:39 AM

Change to Surfside bus lines, route 603: :bu
Tweed Heads, Wharf St          11:58 AM
  Pottsville Shops               12:50 PM

Return journey:

Surfside bus lines, route 603: :bu
   Pottsville Shops               1:57 PM
Tweed Heads, Wharf St          2:52 PM

Change to Surfside bus lines, route 761: :bu
Tweed Heads, Wharf St          3:25 PM
  Varsity Lakes Station          4:07 PM

Change to CityTrain: :lo
   Varsity Lakes                  4:18 PM
  Roma St                        5:36 PM

Later departures from Pottsville with through connections are available if more time is wanted.  The 603 bus also passes through Kingscliff, which will allow longer for lunch if you don't want to go all the way to Pottsville.

So far three excellent tours to start with, keep them coming.  Looks like the go card will be around for a while ... lol

Excellent suggestion Arnz.  Hinterland Connect buses go-card equipped.  http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Travel-and-transport/Public-transport/Hinterland-connect.aspx

Are you sure? I can find the fares and timetable info, but nothing about go-card being accepted.

It would be nice if fares for non-Translink legs of above tours are indicated.

Honest question, but is it physically possible to do something similar to the Tube Challenge, and visit every station in the QR Citytrain network in one day?

Stillwater

Correction.  Contrary to what I wrote a while back, Hinterland Connect buses do not take go-cards.  Fare still reasonable tho. http://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=hinterland-connect

Haven't check timetables specifically but should be.

Start off at Gympie North early morning service --> Caboolture, all stations to Beenleigh, Gold Coast to Varsity Lakes.  Back to town, Doomben, then Ferny Grove, Shorncliffe, Cleveland, then Ipswich Rosewood.  Finish.

Hmm.  Assuming you need to stop at every station for it to count:
GYN-CAB 5:56-7:55
Cab-Eagle Junction 8:01-8:53
EJ - Domestic-EJ 8:54-9:20/9:28-9:39
EJ-Doomben 9:41-9:48
Doomben-Cleveland 9:55-11:20
Cleveland-Park Rd 11:22-12:14
Park Rd-Varsity Lakes 12:36-13:15
Varsity Lakes-Beenleigh 14:18-14:53
Beenleigh-Roma St 14:59-15:58
Roma St-Richlands 16:03-16:33
Richlands-Darra 16:48-16:52
Darra-Ipswich-Rosewood 17:00-17:30/17:35-17:56
Rosewood-Ipswich-Central 18:05-18:26/18:37-19:35
Central-Shorncliffe 19:53-20:26

Not even a challenge.
Roma St-Ipswich-Rosewood 12:30-13:26/13:35-13:56
Rosewood-Ipswich-Roma St 14:05-14:26/14:37-15:33

You left out the Ferny Grove line.

This could start getting difficult after Springfield & Kippa-Ring open.

Gazza

And TBH, its probably more time effective to finish at Rosewood  to avoid doing the long line twice (lets assume we'd want to do this whole thing in the shortest time possible)

Stillwater

So everyone travels to Gympie the night before, ready to catch the 5.56am?

You left out the Ferny Grove line.
Did too.  The answer then becomes:

GYN-CAB 5:56-7:55
Cab-Eagle Junction 8:01-8:53
EJ - Domestic-EJ 8:54-9:20/9:28-9:39
EJ-Doomben 9:41-9:48

Beenleigh-Roma St 14:59-15:58
Roma St-Richlands 16:03-16:33
Richlands-Darra 16:48-16:52
Darra-Ipswich-Rosewood 17:00-17:30/17:35-17:56
Rosewood-Ipswich-Central 18:05-18:26/18:37-19:35
Central-Ferny Grove 20:03-20:35
Ferny Grove-Bowen Hills 20:58-21:22

Bowen Hills-Shorncliffe 21:28-21:56

Almost a challenge now.  There's a couple of insanely tight connections in there, but I think it would be doable in the real world, just maybe not on the theoretical timetable.

Yes, we thought that with the Darra West - Corinda stuff completed the pain would ease a little, but that was BF (before floods).  The gains we were promised are still to be realised in terms of maintenance shutdowns.  I guess it does take a while to properly recover from the '74 floods ...  :D

Power is going off for road stuff at Dinmore as well as I understand it, so it is another opportunity to do a bit, including the station upgrades and other bits and pieces.
