QuoteRBWH Cycle Centre grabs Cycle Friendly Business Award

Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital Cycle Centre at nightThe Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital (RBWH) Cycle Centre beat six other nominations from around Australia to win the Cycle Friendly Business category in the Australian Bicycle Achievement Awards.

The nomination won for its contribution to encouraging cycling by providing a cycle friendly workplace. The centre is about helping people be more active and healthy through providing travel options.

The award delivered great recognition for cycling facilities in Queensland. The award recognises the commitment by the Queensland Government to provide cyclists with the necessary facilities to undertake their trips and arrive at their destination safely.

The Cycle Centre is state-of-the-art and provides cyclists, pedestrians and joggers with access to a modern end-of-trip facility.

The centre has many features, including:

    bicycle parking for 750 bikes
    40 showers
    900 lockers
    hair dryers
    ironing facilities
    clothes drying rooms
    towel service
    24 hour security (including CCTV)
    basic stock shop.

The facilities are available to RBWH and Herston Campus staff, precinct visitors, local business staff and the general public.

The centre was possible through a partnership between Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Health.

Problems:
- not staffed
- no casual use is a serious oversight (must arrange a PIN code)
- too expensive (bicycle parking, especially linked to public transit, should be FREE - car parks often are!)
