A large section of the Bicentennial Bikeway, running alongside Coronation Drive, will be closed and detours put in place for about six months as it undergoes an $8 million upgrade.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk released plans this morning that showed improvements to a section of bikeway from the Merivale rail bridge to the CBD.

The upgrade, due to begin next month, will create separate pedestrian and cycling sections on the bikeway for the 4000 pedestrians and cyclists who use the Bicentennial Bikeway each day.

"[The upgrade] will essentially separate out the movements between cyclists and pedestrians," Cr Quirk said.

A detour for users will see them cross the Go Between Bridge, past the Parmalat milk factory at South Brisbane and back over the Kurilpa Bridge during the six-month construction process.

Cr Quirk said there was always conflict between cyclists and pedestrians on the bikeway and the work was part of major improvements along the Milton stretch of the riverside bikeway.

"This is part of the bigger picture to complete the project by around 2014 which will see the entire strip from Toowong to the CBD separated for pedestrians and cyclists," he said.

About 2400 cyclists and 1600 pedestrians use the Bicentennial bikeway each day.

The work between the Merivale and William Jolly bridges will include a three-metre wide cycle path and a 2.4-metre wide pedestrian section.

Brisbane City Council's $4 million share of the work will be included in next Tuesday's Brisbane City Council budget.

Bicycling Queensland's Ben Wilson welcomed the bikeway improvements.

"This will finally get us into the city in a segregated pathway and people will be happy about that," he said.

"It will be good for the joggers, good for the rollerbladers and good for the cyclists, so all will be happy."

The $8 million project is jointly funded by the council and the state government.

BRISBANE'S busiest bikeway is the first beneficiary of the City Council's budget with Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announcing an $8 million upgrade.

The work, starting next month, will remove dangerous blindspots from a small section of the Bicentennial Bikeway, from the Go Between Bridge and the William Jolly Bridge.

Cr Qurik said the work would separate the cyclist and pedestrian pathways.

"This upgrade will not only enable more people to enjoy the popular bikeway but it will also ensure a safer and more efficient pathway for both casual users and commuters," he said.

"The Bicentennial Bikeway carries more than 4000 pedestrians and cyclists daily and is a major thoroughfare for those travelling between the CBD and Toowong."

During the work, the Bicentennial Bikeway will be closed from the Go Between Bridge and Makerston Street at North Quay, forcing cyclists to take a 600m detour.

The State Government is contributing $4 million towards the upgrade but Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk was not at today's announcement.
