Massive number of train passengers take the OV-fiets

QuoteMassive number of train passengers take the OV-fiets

The popularity of the OV-Fiets (Public Transport bicycle) knows no boundaries. I have written before about this nationwide shared bicycle rental system of the Netherlands' Railways. It made headlines again in the Dutch newspapers recently because the one million bike rentals per year threshold will be passed this year*. OV-Fiets expects 1.1 million round-trips** for 2011, up from 835,000 in 2010. Another mile stone: the number of subscribers will pass the 100,000 mark this year. Up from 34,000 in 2008 when the Netherlands' Railways took over OV-Fiets ...

Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

It's a great system. I've seen it with my own eyes.

It is the perfect way to join long distance travel (trains) with short distance travel to/from home, work, etc. For the money that QR spends on car parking facilities at all the train stations they could have this system many times over - and save all that valuable real estate too! :)

As we all know, the geography of the Netherlands makes it ideal for cycling as most of it's land mass is flat (sea reclaimed) land.

A lot of hills in Brisbane are easy to navigate on a bike

..yes, and good exercise too.
The point I was making is that if it is easier, viz. not hilly, more people will be motivated to take to it.

Terrain is not so much of an issue for large parts of the city - it's more the helmet laws, poor cycling infrastructure and inaccessibility of the existing CityCycle scheme to a walk-up customer which really put a crimp in it.

Ive seen this system as well and would work at the majority of stations within the BCC area. The only stations that should have parking are terminus stations.
