The End Of The Road: Saying Goodbye To Freeways

by Dan Bobkoff

QuoteHalf a century after cities put up freeways, many of those roads are reaching the end of their useful lives. But instead of replacing them, a growing number of cities are thinking it makes more sense just to tear them down ...
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

There are examples in other parts of the world, too. Seoul has removed the huge freeway that cut the city in half, a great example: http://www.preservenet.com/freeways/FreewaysCheonggye.html

Brisbane could now remove the Riverside Expressway, because we have the Clem 7 and the Go Between Bridge. Removal the expressway and remove the tolls on the newer and more efficient roads.

When the Riverside Expressway had a problem, and an exit was closed, miraculously traffic volumes disappeared, no the drivers didn't use other roads, they either didn't need the journeys or they used PT or other alternatives.

Wouldn't that be great? One can only hope! :)

I find it extremely frustrating that the bypass roads are tolled, yet the roads through the city are not.
