I note that the projected population increases for the Gold and Sunshine Coast's are (from Table 2) :-

Year                  2006          2031

Gold Coast          466,400      798,400    an increase of 71.18% (2.85% p.a.)
Sunshine Coast    295,100      508,200    an increase of 72.21% (2.90% p.a.)

South East Queensland

Sunshine Coast and West Moreton SDs (statistical districts) is projected to record most of Queensland's growth,
accounting for 67.5% of the State's total population increase over the 25 years to 2031.

This is anticipated to consist of average annual growth of 1.8% in Brisbane SD, 2.2% in Gold Coast SD and 2.2% in Sunshine Coast SD and 3.0% in West Moreton SD over the 2006 to 2031 period.

South East Queensland is projected to grow from 2.7 million people in 2006 to 4.4 million people by 2031,
an average annual increase of 2.0%.

The figures are fascinating, and spell out the ramifications for public transport -- well, transport in general, really.

Each year for the next five years, the equivalent of a city the size of Albury-Wodonga or Ballarat will have to be provided somewhere in SEQ to cater for population growth.

In 2031, Brisbane's population will be almost $3 million, the Gold Coast 798,400 and the Sunshine Coast 508,200 (in the case of the SC, 8200 more than currently planned) and 345,279 in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs.  That last one is interesting.

In just 15 years, the population of SEQ will be 4 million, or the equivalent of all people who live in all of Queensland today.

When WWII was darkest for Australia, governments drew up a plan to counter a Japanese invasion by evacuating all Australians to below a line drawn from Adelaide to Brisbane, and then devised strategies to defend the so-called 'Brisbane line'.

It would focus minds if we considered the task at hand in preparation for a new Brisbane line -- one we know will happen.

Uni exam question for final year town planning students: "Reputable scientists predict with absolute certainty that a natural disaster will occur in 15 years time, the result being that every Queenslander currently living west of Toowoomba and north of Noosa will need to evacuate to South-east Queensland.  You are in charge of a secret taskforce with all the capacity of government at your disposal to prepare for this evantuality -- the South-east as home to 4 million people in 2026.  Discuss and produce a realistic plan of action."

Note:  Students should not refer to the discredited Connecting SEQ 2031 document, as it proposes action too little and too late.

Town planning student as well hey? I always have a little chuckle when the exams say not to refer to these documents. I had a similar question on my end of year exam last year, involved something along the lines of a Berlin style U- bahn and S-bahn solution
"Where else but Queensland?"
