Let there be lights: relief for Eagle Street pedestrians

The Eagle Street lights have landed.

About 6000 pedestrians a day will no longer have to dodge traffic as they make the dangerous dash across Eagle Street in the Brisbane CBD.

Instead, they will be able to use the street's new $500,000 traffic lights, which were brought into service at about 2pm yesterday.

They were immediately welcomed by Eagle Street newsagent Kristina Cowen, who led the effort to collect 2200 signatures on a petition for the lights, which was accepted by Brisbane City Council in March.

"It has been the want of so many people for the last few years and it has been a dangerous area," she said.

"It has been fixed and it is now safe for pedestrians."

Ms Cowen said three pedestrians had been hit crossing Eagle Street in the past 12 months.

"We have accidents out on the road and people have come into the shop bleeding," she said.

"We have had to call the ambulance and get them all sorted out out."

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said commuters faced a walk of 350 metres to the nearest lights before the lights were installed.

"Putting traffic lights here will make it much easier for pedestrians and hopefully promote more foot traffic to the area, which includes some of the city's best restaurants and entertainment venues," he said.

Where is this?  Only place I can think of is where Elizabeth St ends/joins up with Eagle St just east of Creek St.
