WORKS START ON NEW STATION FOR CAROLINE SPRINGS

Residents in Melbourne's growing west will have access to improved rail services with the start of construction of a new station at Caroline Springs.

Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula was today joined by the Member for Kororoit Marlene Kairouz to turn the first sod at the site of the new station which is part of a $220 million package for new stations in Melbourne's growth areas.

"The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to ensure people in Melbourne's west have good access to public transport services," Mr Pakula said.

"Delivering a new train station near Caroline Springs is an important, practical step to serve the local community, expected to grow to nearly 25,000 within the next 10 years.

"The station, due to open in 2012, will serve current and future public transport needs and help people access jobs, study and also stay connected with family and friends."

The new V/Line station will be situated on the Melton Line, between Rockbank and Deer Park stations, approximately one kilometre south of Caroline Springs estate.

Member for Kororoit Marlene Kairouz said the modern station facilities would be safe and comfortable for commuters to use.

"The design for the new train station will also include extensive lighting and closed circuit camera security surveillance (CCTV) at and near the station, including the car parks, bus stops and approach paths to the station," Ms Kairouz said.

"The station has also been designed to provide Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant access to all passengers.

"The train station will feature a new park and ride facility with approximately 200 car parking spaces, as well as easy access to bus stops and a taxi rank.

"The station will also provide more sustainable transport options with pedestrian and bicycle access to the surrounding area, as well as a bike cage at the station."

The Department of Transport will initially carry out excavation work on an access road to the future station from Christies Road roundabout.

Over 200 suggestions were received following a competition to name the new station. The name of the station will be announced later this year.

New train stations are also being built at Williams Landing, Lynbrook and Cardinia Road in Pakenham.
