I just heard a short comment on ABC radio news from the Minister for Transport discussing the possibility of advertising on the TransLink web site.

Not sure of the context that this came about, but is it really appropriate?  And it just adds to everyones bandwidth drain anyway.

I thought I would have a look at the MTA site, I figure if any transport mob is going to have ads that would be it   ... none

Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

It is a crackpot idea not of the government, but of the Opposition.  It proposes that learner drivers be given 'subsidies' to take lessons and to get their 100 hours of driving up (a requirement of getting a licence) -- the subsidies to come from revenue gained from selling advertising space on the Transport and Translink website.

How will we get into the media today?  I know!  Let's say this.....

Fine. As long as every car dealership and car licence place, every car license sticker and every driving instructor school carries giant pro-PT TransLink advertising to raise revenue for more trains and buses.

If the revenue is channelled directly into improving services, why not?

I personally don't mind advertising as long as it's not intrusive (e.g. pops up in front of the normal page requiring you to hit "close"). I also don't think videos should be delayed by ads (like they are on news sites).

I won't see ads anyway as I have adblock.

Hmm. I think there are enough ads around than to spam all over the TL website.
There are commercial sites around for that kind of thing.

If you want to (I'm being facetious here) you need some GAMBLING/Casino element.
Maybe people who travel can pay an extra $2 to enter the TransLink Sweepstakes (!!! :-r) to win $1 million.

I see enough ads in my life.

And that's per hour. I remember paying that a few years ago. With increasing petrol prices I wouldn't be surprised if it's higher now.

I don't believe subsidising driving lessons is a good idea. What happened to the saying "driving is a privilege, not a right", or something along those lines?

It is what I was paying a few months ago for per hour (and no, I still don't my license), although I'm aware of some places charging a lot more than that for per hour (I know of someone that was paying at least and i'm pretty sure over 150, but they have since changed schools)
