Climate Council: Brisbane named worst capital city for public transport

8th July 2024

The Couriermail has published an article highlighting some of the key findings from the Climate Council Report: NEXT STOP SUBURBIA: MAKING SHARED TRANSPORT WORK FOR EVERYONE IN AUSSIE CITIES

For those of us who are interested in improving public and active transport for all, this report is no great surprise. But hopefully it might focus a few minds in Government, Opposition and within Translink/Transport and Main Roads Queensland, and Brisbane City Council.

#Metro

So 160,000 services is about 4-5 BUZ equivalents.

For the last 10+ years many members here have pointed out low cost high impact projects can expand PT access.

BCC's BUZ program is highly effective and the data bears that out. Patronage increases are generally above 100%.

Focus less on high cost projects, and more on making sure the low cost high impact apples have been picked off the tree first.

Throw SEQ Transport Plans Out - They Are Just Making Things Worse

8th July 2024

RAIL Back On Track says the Climate Council's Report - Next Stop Suburbia (1) shows that SEQ Transport Plans over the last 50 years has delivered nothing but more traffic, more congestion, more accidents, increased injuries and deaths, more cost-of-living pain and the worst public transport in Australia.

This is not about doing more.

Or trying harder.

It is about reversing the mistakes of these decades and urgently overhauling SEQ Transport Plans.

In 1996 around 22% of trips were made by active and public transport and the SEQ Integrated Transport Plan at the time set a target of 34% by 2011 - 13 years ago now.

At the recent Asia Pacific Cycling Conference 2024 held in Brisbane it was highlighted that only 11% of trips are by active and public transport.

Over the last 30 years the transport plans in SEQ has halved the number of people walking cycling and catching public transport instead of doubling it if not tripling it as originally targeted.

This this is the very definition of complete and utter failure and the direct result of the transport investments made across the region.

SEQ Transport Plans need to be thrown out as they are clearly just making things worse.

The State Government and SEQ Councils need to stop throwing good money after bad on road projects rushed through under the pretence of the false premises of "busting-congestion" and "getting people home quicker".

This money needs to fund active and public transport projects along with a complete overhaul of the SEQ bus network that is inefficient, has poor coverage and integration with the rail network, too much duplication and has its origins in the 1970s.

We live in the 21st Century and our bus network needs to be designed accordingly.

Transport planning in SEQ has failed and doing more of the same is just going to make the failure even bigger and cost more to reverse.

I think one of the easiest ways to get there is to cut back late night services.  Buses should be running until 11pm-12pm but outer suburban expresses shouldn't necessarily be running every 15 minutes at these times, especially where there is considerable overlap (eg 130/140/150, 330/333/340 etc) and other corridors have absolutely stuff all running after sunset.  There are vastly more services between the CBD and the intersection of Beaudesert Road and Illaweena Street at late night (12 per hour both ways) than most places within a few km of the CBD during the day.

ABC News --> Climate Council says many greater Brisbane residents without frequent public transport

QuoteAbout two-thirds of residents across the greater Brisbane region do not have access to frequent, all-day public transport services, according to a new analysis from the Climate Council.

The organisation wants services to operate at least every 15 minutes, between 7am and 7pm, and within 800 metres of every home in Australia's capital cities.

In its latest report released on Monday, the Climate Council found about 66 per cent of residents within the greater Brisbane area were not serviced by that standard of public transport.

The Climate Council said that equated to more than 1.5 million people living across the region, which also took in suburbs from the Logan, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, and Redlands local government areas.

The report put the Queensland capital behind Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney — and warned access to "good" public transport services ended 8 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD for most people. ...

MyCityLogan --> Logan left stranded: public transport black hole

QuoteLogan suburbs have the worst public transport of any capital city region in the country, a new report claims, with less than 20 per cent of some residents able to access "quality" shared transport.

"Leaving them stuck using polluting and expensive cars for most of their trips," the Climate Council of Australia report claimed.

Climate Council Head of Policy and Advocacy, Dr Jennifer Rayner, said public transport should be at the level where commuters can simply "turn up and go from point A to B".

The council agreed more public and active transport opportunities were needed to "get people out of cars" and curb the damage caused by fossil fuels.

To do this, experts expect services to run a minimum of every 15 minutes between 7am-7pm and within 800 metres of homes. ...
