QuoteWe know improving the timetable is one way of helping us deliver a better service, and to transport more people, more often, with fewer cancellations and less delays.

The October 2010 timetable sees 285 new weekly services added across the network.

And thanks to the 211 new and extended weekly services added in June 2010, Metro is now responsible for a record 13,365 services per week.

Step by step, we're transforming Melbourne's train system towards more consistent stopping patterns and more evenly spaced services so we can deliver more frequent and more reliable services.

So as we transform and improve Melbourne's train network, we hope you enjoy travelling with Metro, whatever your destination.

A new Metro timetable begins this Sunday (10 October), with 285 new weekly services being added across the network, including 45 during busy peak times.

This timetable is the second phase of Metro's plan to address crowding and reliability issues, moving Melbourne's train system towards more frequent and reliable services.

Metro CEO Andrew Lezala said June's timetable change led to improved performance on some of Melbourne's busiest train lines and October's timetable would have a similar effect.

"We've seen the benefits the June timetable had on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Frankston lines by providing more evenly spaced services and reducing overcrowding, and October's changes will lead to similar improvements on the Craigieburn, Sydenham and Werribee lines," Mr Lezala said.

"We've focused these changes on where they're needed most, to help us to transport more people, more often, with fewer cancellations and less delays.

"We've done some major works around our Newport stabling yards, and the whole Laverton rail project has been fast-tracked to help make these extra services possible."

Mr Lezala said adding hundreds of extra services was also possible due to the addition of 12 new trains to the network – part of the 38 new X'Trapolis trains being delivered under the Victorian Transport Plan.

"More trains means more capacity, and as the rollout of the new trains continues, we'll keep putting those trains to where they're needed most."

The changes mainly focus on the Craigieburn, Sydenham, Werribee and Frankston lines, however, more services, greater capacity, and altered running times are among the changes being made on other lines.

The major improvements include:
• The Werribee line gains four new peak services each weekday, while the busy Sydenham line receives three peak services each weekday, and the Craigieburn receives two new peak services each weekday.
The Frankston line will increase its service frequency from 15 minutes to 10 minutes between 8:45am and 4:15pm each weekday. Half of those will run via the city loop, and the other half will run direct to Flinders Street. Service frequency in the evening will also increase on the Frankston line, reducing from the current 30 minute frequency to a 20 minute frequency after 7pm.
• The Epping, Hurstbridge, Belgrave, Lilydale and Glen Waverley lines will benefit on weeknights and weekends, with most services gaining an increase in capacity, running as six-carriage trains instead of three-carriages.

Metro is starting to show their experience.  As I reported from the last visit in August the signs were there ( http://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=4195.msg31174#msg31174 ).

The timetable changes they are implementing are very good and provide a model for what is needed here.  Consistent patterns with proper train frequencies.   South-east Queensland is fast becoming a sad joke really.

O_128, you had better watch out as the new QR train rottweilers are around!!!  ;)

I welcome change, upgrades and improvements, I really do.
But I get so frustrated when I am stuck at a platform for 30 minutes.
This just shouldn't happen in Australia's 3rd largest city.

SEQ trains really are not anywhere near what they could be in terms of performance. Perth confirms this. Both have similar city characteristics to Brisbane, and have managed to do more with far, far less.
