Media Release 13 January 2008

SEQ - Public transport off to a great start in 2008!

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport has welcomed the recent initiatives to improve river transport, increase the number of buses on congested routes and welcomes the commitment that Citytrain cancellations will be reduced.

Robert Dow said:

?Increasing road congestion and higher fuel prices, as well as environmental concerns will continue to put increasing pressure on our public transport in SEQ.?

?Recent announcements of increased bus services, additional CityCats and the introduction of extra Citytrain crew and trains is very welcome news for the public transport commuters of SEQ.?

?Community concerns are starting to be heard.  Thanks to Minister Mickel, Translink, Brisbane Transport, Private Operators and QR Citytrain and all public transport staff for their ongoing efforts to improve our public transport services. We would also like acknowledge Mr Nicholls, the opposition Transport spokesman for his constructive input too,? said Robert Dow, spokesman for RAIL Back On Track.

QR Citytrain now has regular daily or more frequent updates on the web site --> http://www.citytrain.com.au/

The peak time results are shown as well as any significant disruptions to normal timetable services.

This is a great move, and more communication initiatives are to be rolled out later this year too.

Well done QR Citytrain.

I also agree that it is beneficial to receive updates of cancellations etc from the web site.

I would like to see the criteria used for on time running. At what point in the journey is a train 'late'.
Given the 'fat' that is contained in the present timetable, it is possible for a train to be 3-4 minutes late at one's home station yet on time at central. This even extends to long dwell times at certain major stations such as Northgate particularly for express services and hold ups in the inner city tunnels.
A study of the original electrification timetables on certain lines will reveal that times are actually slower today.

Still the reporting must give someone a warm fuzzy feeling!!
