Petrie Terrace achieves official suburb status

Residents living in and around Brisbane's Inner West may have been using the name colloquially for years, but thanks to a recent decision the suburb will now be officially known as Petrie Terrace.

Treasurer and Member for Mount Coot-tha Andrew Fraser said the decision had been a long-time coming.

"This is a historical decision for the local community - until now Petrie Terrace had officially been considered just an unbounded locality," Mr Fraser said.

"Since 1975, Brisbane's central business district and what locals defined as Petrie Terrace were grouped together and known only as 'City'.

"Following extensive public consultation, the Queensland Government officially renamed the inner Brisbane CBD as Brisbane City and recorded Petrie Terrace as an official suburb.

"Boundaries for the new Petrie Terrace suburb include Hale Street, Musgrave Road, Countess Street and part of the main railway line between Countess and Hale Streets."

Mr Fraser said the names Brisbane City and Petrie Terrace were officially recorded as suburbs in the Queensland Place Names Gazetteer on 18 June 2010.

"The only property addresses that have changed as a consequence of the renaming of 'City' are those in the area now officially named Petrie Terrace," he said.

Mr Fraser said the new suburb boundaries of Brisbane City and Petrie Terrace also support the national campaign to create a state-wide set of digital locality boundaries which complement the use of computer based information for dispatching emergency and other community services.

The Department of Environment and Resource Management administers the Place Names Act 1994 which provides processes for the naming of areas and geographic features.

Further details about place names are available at derm.qld.gov.au.
