A report by Vic Roads regarding recent inspections on trucks in Victoria contained in THE AGE has some very sobering figures!!

                                         8828 trucks inspected
3943 trucks found with safety faults
182 truck drivers caught using a mobile phone while driving
109 truck drivers caught with no licence at all
285 truck drivers caught behind the wheel of an unregistered truck
1640 fines handed out to drivers with defective trucks
1    24 year old driver of a 68 tonne B double caught drink driving

These figures are very concerning and justify my indignation of the trucking industry.

It's a cut throat business run on very slim margins and despite the absolute vital necessity of the trucking industry as the lifeblood in the veins of the australian economy, little has been done over the years by way of reform - just higher government fines which do little to structurally change the fundamental issues.

Have to say I had a chuckle (black humour) at this little incident today in brisbane - major incident - ruptured drum of hydrochloric acid dropped on a hugely busy road...... truck and people responsible yet to be found.
