AN elderly using a walking frame has died after being hit by a train as she attempted to cross railway tracks at Springvale in Melbourne's southeast.
Emergency services were called to Springvale Railway Station at 2pm (AEST), soon after the woman was hit by a Gippsland-bound V/line train carrying 138 passengers, the Herald Sun reports.

The woman died at the scene after being hit by the 1.25pm Southern Cross to Bairnsdale train.

The passengers on the train were moved on to coaches for the remainder of their journey.

Buses are replacing trains between Dandenong and Westall stations on the Dandenong, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines.

Metro Trains spokesman Chris Whitefield said 12 buses were ferrying passengers between Dandenong and Westall.

"That will double for peak hour from about 5pm," he said.

"We're doing everything we can to help peple move from beyond Westall."

Police have spoken to witnesses and the coroner is also at the scene.

In Sydney this week a man died after being hit by a train near Newtown Station.

Police say the dead man was one of a group of people trying to cross a rail line.
