Buses and trains ready for weekend footy bonanza

With four local teams in action, fans are urged to take public transport to the game during the south east's big weekend of footy.

The weekend kicks off tonight with the Gold Coast Titans and St George Dragons NRL clash at Skilled Park, Gold Coast.

On Saturday night, the Brisbane Lions take on the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, while Queensland Reds tackle the Bulls at Suncorp Stadium.

Rounding out the weekend's footy-fest is a second Suncorp clash on Sunday, as the Broncos take on the Cronulla Sharks.

A combined turn-out of more than 100,000 fans are expected to attend the matches.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said public transport was most efficient way for large numbers of people to travel to and from the matches.

"Translink will put on more than 500 shuttle buses and 42 extra trains services to get fans to the grounds and home again," she said.

"Fans can show their pre-purchased match-day game ticket to take advantage of free transport to and from the game.

"For the Suncorp and Gabba games this weekend, free travel is provided on Brisbane Transport and Queensland Rail services.

"Free travel to Skilled Stadium is provided by Queensland Rail and Surfside Buslines services."

Together with event shuttle bus services, TransLink will provide 23 additional scheduled services prior to the start of the Titians game, and 14 additional services after the game travelling from various Gold Coast locations to and from the stadium.

The Lions game at the Gabba has regular event shuttle buses running from Roma St station, Adelaide Street, Eight Mile Plains busway station, Carindale bus interchange and Chermside bus interchange and also returning to these locations after the game (except Adelaide Street).

Both Suncorp games also have regular event shuttles running to and from the stadium and Adelaide Street, Makerston Street (City), Eight Mile Plains busway station, Carindale bus interchange, Chermside interchange, and Waterworks Road, The Gap.

"With so many regular and extra services available to get you to and from the footy this weekend, fans going to the games should check out the TransLink website for details about service times, where to catch their shuttles and period of validity for the free travel," Ms Nolan said.

To plan your journey or for further information on extra services for these events, visit TransLink's website www.translink.com.au or phone the Call Centre on 13 12 30.
