CBD Map

The are buses down Adelaide street have bus priority lanes, but Rockets and Expresses enter Elizabeth Street and set down at that horrible Myer Centre unofficial "busway stop". Then buses battle traffic all the way to the Riverside area and the Valley.

One idea would be to close off a ramp (Margaret Street or Elizabeth Street off-ramps) for exclusive bus use only during the morning.
Bus lanes would be put on George street and/or down Elizabeth street and the Riverside Expressway all the way to the busway portal if possible.

The unofficial Myer Centre bus stops would get upgraded and bus laned.
A second busway style set down stop would go closer to the Riverside centre.

These places are chaos in the morning... they should be fixed...

If you did Margaret St, that ramp has two lanes so you could nominate the left lane as a bus lane.  Main problem with that, is that even then Elizabeth St would be a more preferable place to drop pax.  I think just a bus lane on Elizabeth St.

I'm not fussed either way.

I thought 'Margaret Street' to let all the QUT kiddies off, and then the bus could stop in George St to let all the Bureaucrats off, and then it could turn right into Elizabeth Street (to let everyone else off) and continue in a bus lane to Riverside & Valley

Adelaide Street Expresses could continue and turn right into Adelaide St.

Why there is no exclusive bus only street in the CBD. (Adelaide St not exclusive)

I have always thought that Adelaide street should be bus only during peak hours..... But that won't happen as it's Campbell Newmann that removed the bus lanes from Coro Drive and Ann Streets as soon as he came into power...

Perhaps not the worst question, but note that Brisbane does more for CBD bus priority than anywhere else I could name with the QSBS/KGSBS/Adelaide St.

I think that the Margaret St service might be best provided by City Precincts services as opposed to the normal services.  Your proposal would slow things down as compared to using the Elizabeth St ramp. Unless the suggested bus lane on Margaret St speeds things up so much that it overcomes hitting 3 more lights at George St, Mary St and Charlotte St.

The part I thought was wierd was when he proposed to make it one way for local access.  Getting taxis out of there would be an interesting possibility.

I agree. Adelaide street should be turned into a transit mall. On the other hand, Elizabeth Street might be worth a look too.
I doubt that this will happen if the metro goes underneath Adelaide Street.

It would slow things down, but the lost time would be something like 60-90 seconds at the worst?
And you get 2 extra stops- so less walking (huge numbers of people cross at that intersection). But I don't mind either way.
Very close to the CBD, blistering speed is not a high priority as say being able to catch a service without walking too far.

True, but with Rockets, BUZ and buses coming from everywhere it sure is extremely busy (peak hour, 2007 figures).
There is a bus about every 45 seconds on Adelaide Street
There is a bus about every 19 seconds on Elizabeth Street
Elizabeth Street *really* needs a bus lane all the way to Riverside & the valley

Actually, looking at those figures add weight to my opinion that if the 130/140/150/157/555 used the Captain Cook Bridge and Elizabeth St inbound that would leave enough room in QSBS for all the Cultural Centre-Elizabeth St services and actually have room left over for some Adelaide St services.

I didn't think Elizabeth St was busier than the Cultural Centre!

Anyway, in answer to your question, I'd expect an average of around 1 minute delay per CBD traffic light.
Speed not being a priority would be a matter of your opinion.
Elizabeth Street needs a bus lane, at least in peak, but it probably doesn't make much difference after Creek St.

You know, I didn't either! It is a bit of a surprise...
In the 2007 Mass Transit Report Cultural Centre has:

* 179 buses/hour, so a bus every 20 seconds or so
* Captain Cook Bridge carries just under that at 169 buses/hour
* 149 rockets/hour turn off the Expressway and into Elizabeth St. They are joined by 38 buses from the Cultural Centre (things like 105, 107 those kind of routes)

So yes, Elizabeth St is just as busy as Cultural Centre. And it has none of the facilities- no grade separation, no bus lane, no proper platform, little information, no ticket machine etc etc.

The numbers are surely higher now with new services (66, 140 BUZ etc).

All up there is a very good case for bus lanes on the Riverside Expressway and on Elizabeth street.
