BRISBANE ranks second-worst as a car-friendly city compared with other state capitals.

Research from Virgin Car Insurance shows Perth was best and Sydney worst.

However, Brisbane had the lowest cost for toll roads at 13¢ a kilometre, compared with Sydney at $2.02 and Melbourne at 29¢, while all other capitals have no toll roads.

The research also covered fuel prices, insurance, registration, parking fines, car theft and available parking spaces.

Regional Queensland is no more friendly to drivers, with the best-placed city being Toowoomba at 14th, and three Tasmanian towns taking the top places. Townsville (19), Cairns (21) and Rockhampton (22) were the only other Queensland cities in the top 30.

Virgin Money Australia boss Matt Baxby said capital cities had cheaper fuel prices than regional areas, but the provincial cities paid highly for all other criteria.

Queensland registration costs were among the highest with Mackay, at $655.25, being the highest regional centre

Brisbane was fifth in petrol prices, second in car insurance ($1560), had the second highest registration ($655.25) and second cheapest metered parking ($4 for two hours).

Doesn't Perth have a decent train system? Just goes to show that if you improve public transport, you improve the usability of roads.

Excellent point, Derwan,
Have you made the same comment on the curious snail's article? It's almost certainly a point the neaderthal Hinchliffe hasn't thought of. :-t

So we have the second worst traffic, declining liveability, declining health of our environment, increasing road toll, etc.  Time for a new approach.

I'm sure once the Clem 7 opens up and the new bridge across from the ICB, that Brisbane will move up the toll-road rankings..
