Directional go gates

At the major stations with gates eg. Central, it is very difficult and sometimes unsafe for the punters to attempt to go against the peak go flow.  There is a case for a gate to be closed  to the peak flow and used only for those touching on against the peak directions.  Shouldn't be too hard, probably contingent on a few more gates but there is room.

Any comments?

There should be at least 1 'single direction' gate for both entry and exit all the time, with the rest 'bi-directional'.

eg.

1 entry only gate
1 exit only gate
1 or 2 wheelchair bi-directional gates
the rest bi-directional gates

I like Fridge's idea.  You could have a big "Stop" sign for the particular gate that is set to only go the opposite way.  No need to change it in the afternoon.  Another gate would be set the other way with a "Stop" sign the other side.

For the gate you can go through when everyone else is going the other way, you could have "Against the flow" signs (with arrows) leading them to the gate that is only for that direction.

QuoteHow does it work with the peaks Stephen?  Just interested ..

Staff who work on the gatelines can change the direction of the gates. Thus in the am, most gates may be operating in one direction, and in the pm peak most gates may be operating in the opposite direction. Gates can have their directions changed as demand increases and decreases.

Definitely agree something has to be done.

Just saw at Roma St this morning two commuter trying to get through the same gate in opposite directions.  Both touched on/off at the same time - she got through the gate to enter the station, he didn't, the gate closed before he could.  He definitely touched off though, I saw the screen display the fare debit.  He touched again to get out.

Not good.

on CityRail all gates are directional too.  I like Fridge's idea also.  Probably 1 entry and 1 exit gate per exit with the rest bi-di seems about right.

Most overseas implementations have gates only operating in one direction at a time. I believe it should be the same here, ie the gates on the left on direction of approach should be green, with those on the right red and the disabled/luggage gate should remain bidirectional.  In peak direction the majority of gates should be green. The computer should be programmed at each station to change this automatically with manual override if required.

Yes,  Roma St needs a rethink in terms of gates and flows.  Very difficult for someone to go against the peak am flow (as for Central).
