A section of Queensland Rail (QR) will be reopened after parts of the network were washed away during the Christmas floods.

QR Network Acting Executive General Manager Tim Ripper on Saturday announced the Central rail line would resume service following two weeks of extensive repair work.

The line was severely damaged during the central Queensland floods over the Christmas holiday season.

"There was significant damage where parts of the ground had washed away requiring major repair work, and further rains hampered repair efforts during the last fortnight," Mr Ripper said in a statement.

The Spirit of the Outback service from Brisbane will arrive at Emerald on Sunday afternoon before travelling to Longreach and then making its return trip.

"Passenger and freight services have been effected with the closure of the line and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience while we worked to have this line reopened," Mr Ripper said.
