Some observations on NYE train adventures.

I caught the 6.40pm from Oxley to Graceville good loading with most seats in use and with a security guard in blue uniform in the carriage. However having a security presence on the train is of absolutely no benefit to the general commuting public if the security guard stands (and after a few minutes changes carriages) and ignores amplified rap music, wannabe gangsta teenagers with their feet on the seats and drinking liquids sitting there using the old staring intimidation technique on other commuters.

After a great night with friends I caught the 1.52am back from Graceville to Oxley, all was good.

This morning I received some feedback from three young german ladies staying with me who caught the train into southbank. The went in on the 6.10pm from Oxley - all good. Then they tried to catch the 3.14am back to Oxley from Roma Street. Apparently there was some confusion at Roma street as to which platform the trains would be arriving, some platforms were locked off and there were conflicting messages over the PA system as to what platform commuters should be using.

Feedback from everyone I spoke to was consistently positive regarding the extra services between 1am and 5am - and it would be a positive move to put some more early morning services on all lines as a permanent fixture.

Unfortunately, as I understand it, the security guards have no powers.  They are merely a "presence" to make people feel better.  They cannot (legally) instruct people to remove their feet from seats, etc.

There is an obvious need for an increase of the railway police squad to replace these presently impotent Security staff, and at the risk of upseting some a proportion of these staff should be in plain clothes so that they can effectively police these antisocial behavours by a minority.   :-t
