NEARLY half a billion trips were made on Melbourne's public transport system in the past year.

Trains, trams and buses are carrying more passengers than ever, with a record 494.5 million trips taken in the 12 months to September.

But the recent runaway growth in commuter numbers is starting to slow, according to the Department of Transport's figures.

Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the enormous growth rate was probably over.

"Hopefully it is. Probably it is," Ms Kosky told the Herald Sun. "We will monitor the figures closely. We couldn't continue to have growth at the rate it was."

A survey shows improving satisfaction with Melbourne's public transport. Commuters have scored public transport services 59.8 out of 100 from July to September, an increase of 2.2 points on the previous quarter.

Ms Kosky said Melbourne's new public transport operators were ready to take over.

Metro Trains and KDR Melbourne assume control of the train and tram systems next Monday.

"Connex has had responsibility during a difficult period, with patronage growth that has been extraordinary," Ms Kosky said.

"The public has been upset, understandably, with a number of things that have happened over the last 12 months.

"Connex accepts some of the responsibility for that."

Ms Kosky said the slowdown in patronage was in line with predictions.

The first of the new trains begins service next month, and the second was unloaded at the docks on Monday.

What a silly and stupid statement.  Of course the rapid growth is not over.  The supply of trains and trams has run out and is stiffling growth.

Again this shows that if the services are provided frequently people will catch public transport.
