THE number of Brisbane motorists willing to pay a toll to drive in the CBD has doubled in two years as congestion has soared, new research shows.

The annual road user survey of 2500 Australians by AAMI found 27 per cent of Brisbane drivers thought those who entered the city should be charged.

Treasury boss Ken Henry this month raised the prospect of congestion pricing to stop peak-hour traffic snarls.

The same AAMI survey in 2007 showed only 12 per cent of Brisbane motorists backed the tax.

The number of Queenslanders who thought drivers should pay was significantly greater than in Melbourne and Sydney, where only 17 per cent of drivers approved the proposal.

An RACQ survey of 2000 members this year found more than half of Brisbane's drivers would accept a $5 congestion tax if it meant less peak-hour traffic snarls.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

So 73% were against it  :pr .. I think they have more support than the 27% who want it.  ::)

If someone were to ask:

Do you support the increased toll on the Gateway Bridge?
Do you support the toll on the Go Between Bridge?
Do you support the toll on the Clem7?
Do you support the increase in Public Transport fares?

Do you really think people are going to say, "Yes"?

Basically, if you ask anyone who drives into the city, they will be against the CityToll.  If you ask anyone who (like me) virtually never drives into the city, they'll be all for the CityToll - as it may mean a reduction for other toll roads.

Here's another question.  Will the government suggest they can reduce the increases in PT fares if they introduce a CityToll?  Could be a bargaining chip.

I would be in favour of a city tax if the clem 7 was free
"Where else but Queensland?"
