Minister for Main Roads
The Honourable Craig Wallace
24/09/2009

New rail crossing overpass name announced

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace and Member for Sunnybank Judy Spence today announced the new name for the Acacia Ridge rail crossing overpass would honour a woman who worked as the Acacia Ridge post mistress for almost 50 years - the late Olive Drew.

Ms Spence said the Olive Drew Bridge was being named as part of Queensland's 150th birthday celebrations.

"This is a wonderful way to mark our great state's birthday while honouring an important local figure," she said.

"An active and highly respected member of her local community, Ms Drew fostered more than 30 children during her life.

"She also worked as a midwife for local families and actively participated in the local community and church events.

"Even today she is fondly remembered by the local community and this is truly an opportunity to honour her."

Mr Wallace, on site today with Member for Algester Karen Struthers, said the Acacia Ridge rail crossing overpass, scheduled to be completed by mid-2010, played an important part in celebrating the state's 150th birthday.

The bridge names submitted for consideration are reviewed by a panel of community members in each region, and names are shortlisted for final consideration by the Minister.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads received more than 190 entries to help name bridges throughout the greater Brisbane area.

"Having so many entries certainly made the decision very difficult in choosing the appropriate name for the overpass," Mr Wallace said.

"However, I believe we chose a name that reflects the community input, the local history and recognises an important local identity.

Ms Struthers said it was a real pleasure to see the local community getting behind the Q150 project.

"I'm proud we could honour Ms Drew in such a wonderful way. It is important to recognise those who helped shape the development of the community," Ms Struthers said.
"I would like to congratulate Geoffrey Walker who suggested the new name for this overpass. I also thank all those who submitted their suggestions."

"This is what the Q150 bridge naming celebrations are all about, Queenslanders sharing their pride in the things that make our state unique and having the opportunity for them to be recognised in significant road structures."

The Q150 bridge naming project is a state-wide initiative that will name more than 50 bridges across Queensland.
