You will find that very few suburban rail systems use automatic train opertation (ATO). However cab signalling, intermittant and continuous ATP are becoming more common on suburban rail systems.

ATO is however commonplace on nearly all new metro systems, and many older metro systems have or are moving to ATO.

Almost thought you were talking about the tax office :-)
It would be nice to get a model QR train set. It would be a good gift.

Some tube lines are already automated

The Victoria Line was automated from the late 60s (although the driver tends to have to monitor the brakes for accurate station stopping). The Central Line from the 90s. Most other lines are due for automation.

Not on suburban rail. A driver is essential on suburban rail system as they are not segregated (share tracks with other services) , not grade separated (usually at ground level with many level crossings), and easy to intrude (trespass is easily possible and supervision is poor).

Many metros can be driverless as they are usually fully segregated (do not share tracks with other services), grade separated (underground or elevated with no level crossings), and intrusion is difficult (track access difficult and high levels of supervision).

I think it would be possible. Perhaps not now.
We sent people to the moon in 1969 (we also pulled the trams!! :-r) . It is now 2009. Surely, we can make a train drive itself.

You can make a train drive itself, but you still need a human driver to make sure the train doesn't hit people, cars, or other things that aren't meant to be on the tracks. Also, unless you have platform edge doors, you will need a human for door supervision.

That isn't a metro. It will still be a suburban rail system. There are differences, as outlined in my earlier post.
