The penalty is clearly inadequate.  The law must be changed to make all members of society accountable, the trauma that can be caused by irresponsible actions by crossing railways at unauthorised crossings is trauma that is easily avoided.  Security and safety is why we need our station staff.

HUNDREDS of people continue to put their lives on the line for "cheap thrills" at train stations.
Pictures taken last week, along with startling images provided by Queensland Rail, show the terrible risks still being taken by people across the state.

New QR figures reveal 1750 cases of people walking across train lines last financial year.

During this period QR officers issued 444 fines, for $150 each, and 86 warnings.

New Transport Minister John Mickel has launched an angry attack on the trespassers.

"It's not just kids, it's adults, the lot. Surely to goodness there is some point in our society where people are going to take responsibility for their own actions and their own lives," he said.

I see Boondall is on the list of stations they're watching.  "Jon" commented on the Courier Mail site that he used to cross the track because it was so far to walk to get up and over the overpass.  I tend to agree, although I wouldn't think of crossing the tracks myself.

If you approach from the southern end of the station (as most do), you have to walk the length of the platform and then virtually the same again to go up and down the mammoth overpass.

It would be nice to have an overpass the other side.  Failing that, a pedestrian-only crossing like at Nudgee.  Or at worst, stairs up to the Bicentennial Road overpass on both sides of the line to at least cater for those walking from College Green (like me).
