Hmm. I would predict that a similar problem might exist for people using the Great Circle Line...
There are relatively few cross town routes which avoid the city (599,598,77)...

I wonder if 77 overcharges when you use it?

I think it would be fair to charge for zone 1 on a 77.  Unless, of course, you don't go through the Clem 7.

I agree. You are still travelling the same distance and therefore should still pay for that portion of operating costs.

As for the Corinda/Yeerongpilly thing, that is an example of why they don't use gated busway stations - There would be way too many of these type of variations.

So the system thinks that everyone is going to the city?

On the train Cubic does not know my exact movements just where I started and where I got off.  Why should a bus route be different. Why should I be charged more for taking a different route if I end up at the same place.  The train wouldn't. If the system is treating the route choice you took to get to the same place differently then it is designed wrong.  UQ to Lutwych is the same no matter how you get there.

You can get from UQ to Lutwych via 109 and 333, or 209 and 77. The former is zone 1&2 journey, the latter is a zone 2 only journey. If the busway was gated at both ends, the system would not know which route you took. Which fare would you charge passengers? Would you penalise route 77 passengers avoiding the city with a zone 1 fare, or would you allow via CBD passengers to take up seats on crowded Z1 routes and not pay for zone 1?

I wonder what you'd be charged if you touched on at Corinda and off at Yeerongpilly in peak?  Would it assume you'd gone through the city or realise you could have gone via Tennyson?

This doesn't answer the question, but on London Underground where there is occasionally a choice of routes via different zones, they tend to charge the lower fare. However journeys where there are a choice of routes that could result in a different fare (e.g. North Acton to Ravenscourt Park) are rarely made journeys, so it's not like TfL will notice the loss of income.

Actually, you'd use the 139 or 169; route 209 doesn't serve Buranda. Nonetheless, you shouldn't have to pay for zone 1 on the 77. But we all know how backwards and greedy everyone is nowadays.

Well for Ipswich-Beenleigh/GC line trips yes because apart from Tennyson that is the only place you can change.

However if you are transferring from FG line to Shorncliffe line you won't be charged for zone 1 fare because it assumes you transfer at Bowen Hills.

Are you sure? Bowen Hills is a Z1 only station.
