A fire which engulfed a train carrying explosives near Maryborough early this morning has been extinguished.

Emergency services were called to the rail yard in the township of Tiaro, 27 kilometres south of Maryborough, about 3.40am when the locomotive ignited.

"We had four crews on scene, urban and rural, who quickly brought the fire under control," a Department of Emergency Services spokeswoman said.

Fire crews managed to contain the fire to the locomotive, which was clear of explosive cargo and stationed at the Blackmount Road rail yard.

It is understood the fire started in the ventilation chamber of the locomotive.

The carriages have since been separated from the locomotive.

No-one was injured, but the fire cut power to the township of Tiaro.

LATEST: A FIRE in a train carrying explosives has been contained at the Tiaro railyard near Maryborough on Queensland's Fraser Coast.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Superintendent Jeffrey Wright said the driver noticed flames coming from the ventilation shaft just north of Gympie.

"He's done the right thing in pulling over and summoning the fire service. A train travelling along the tracks allows the flames to generate even further,'' Supt Wright said.

Four fire crews responded and were informed one of the carriages was full of gunpowder.

"We've had Queensland Rail de-energise the electricity supply and the Queensland Ambulance Service attended as a precaution,'' he said.

"We were able to access the ventilation chamber of the engine and the fire was extinguished without incident or injury.''

Supt Wright said the train was then able to continue up the track where QR would appraise the damaged engine and replace it.

"It should then be able to continue its journey to North Queensland,'' he said.

A statement issued by QR praised the ``expertise'' of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service in quickly containing the blaze.

"The train was carrying containerised goods which were not affected by the fire,'' the statement read.

"The track was cleared at 6.10am and normal train services have resumed along that section of rail. No passenger trains have been delayed as a result of the incident.''
