Brisbane to get hundreds more bus services

Brisbane City Council says it will spend $700,000 over the next two months on 436 extra bus services a week to meet growing demand and ensure new bus infrastructure is not wasted.

However, Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has called on TransLink - which pays the council and other transport providers to run specific passenger services in South East Queensland - to fund the new bus services next financial year.

Passengers will next week have access to 79 new services each weekday, along with 41 new weekend services, including 22 additional Saturday services.

"These new services are strategically spread across the city to meet the urgent need of commuters along our busiest routes," he said.

"On services to the University of Queensland from the southside, we've had growth of 35 per cent, so we're adding 29 extra morning services to meet that demand."

Cr Newman said the council was willing to spend $700,000 running the new services until the end of June, but he expected TransLink to step up to the task in July.

Public and Active Transport chair Jane Prentice said the council was already spending $200 million on public transport this financial year.

The bus network carried about 71 million passengers a year, she said.

Minister for Transport
The Honourable Rachel Nolan
23/04/2009

Bligh Government boosts bus services for Logan

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan and Logan MPs have welcomed the new weekly bus services for the Logan region, set to start next Monday.

Minister Nolan today told State Parliament that more than 150 new bus services each week would be introduced for the Logan region to alleviate public transport demand and reduce traffic congestion.

"We are serious about tackling traffic congestion by investing in public transport. That's why the Queensland Government is investing approximately $1.5 million a year to further improve services in the Logan region," Ms Nolan said.

"From Monday next week, services in the Logan region will cater for around 1,000 additional passengers every weekday during peak periods."

Ms Nolan said the extra services would help address growing passenger demand, particularly during the busy peak periods, by providing more frequent and reliable services and improving timetables.

"TransLink is providing 15 extra bus services each day in the weekday peak periods on both local and city-bound routes - catering to a potential 5,000 extra passengers from Monday to Friday each week.

"There will also be 38 extra bus services each day of the weekend and on public holidays, providing capacity for an extra 4,900 passengers each weekend - not to mention the added convenience.

"The new services will be rolled out across the Logan region, on routes 551, 555, 561, 573, 577 and 579," Ms Nolan said.

"This will significantly benefit commuters in areas including Logan, Loganlea, Woodridge, Slacks Creek, Springwood, Crestmead and Rochedale, among others."

Woodridge MP Desley Scott, Springwood MP Barbara Stone, Waterford MP Evan Moorhead, TransLink CEO Peter Strachan and TransLink staff will be on hand for the launch of the new services on Monday April 27 at Loganholme bus station, handing out new timetables, and also answering any questions commuters may have.

Considering many bus services are getting upgraded to 15 min off peak on weekends id like to know where off peak 15 min on weekdays is for trains
"Where else but Queensland?"

haakon

Given the restrictions on the number of weekends that QR train drivers can work, is there enough to cover 15 minute intervals?
