Central freight rail services face uncertain future

QuoteCentral freight rail services face uncertain future

Queensland Rail (QR) has confirmed it is considering the future of some rail services to central Queensland.

Banana Shire Mayor John Hooper has expressed concerns that QR may be planning to withdraw some freight rail services from Biloela.

In a statement, QR says no final decision has been made, but it will be considering the issue in coming weeks.

Queensland Rail says the Biloela rail freight train service has been losing more than $1 million each year and rail cannot compete with cheaper road transport.

The bean counters have pruned back the branches to the point that the trunk of the tree can no longer survive.
One must question this ongoing destruction of a community owned asset and what has happned to the government obligation to provide services for both freight and passengers to rural Queensland.
A fair question to ask the govermnent members to respond to and should either they fail to respond or to act in the electorate interest then perhaps suggesting that their retirement is on the horizon might elicit a more focused answer.

It seems that Pacific National and QR are only interested in coal. Almost every other commodity that is still hauled by rail is either under threat or about to be. We will soon be left with 2 railway companies competing only for the coal haulage whilst thousands of trucks roar down the highways, byways and back streets.
